RENT CEREMONY 2005
Ringing his bell and accompanied by a thrilled child, London’s Town
Crier, Peter Moore, sets off from New Row, Covent Garden on a glorious
sunny day in June. He rings his bell and announces that “the Covent
Garden Area Trust is about to pay its rent five red apples and five
posies of flowers. Everyone is welcome to join the Trustees as they circle
the Piazza.” The crowds surge and more children rush to the front
with the Town Crier.
Trustees Mark Price and Rowena Lusty follow the jazz band. The Trust’s
Vice Chairman Neil Bisset carries a posy behind. The beautiful bouquets
and the red apples were donated again this year by New Covent Garden Market
and were artfully fashioned by florist Sophie Hanna.

Walking up King Street towards the Piazza with the band oompha-ing behind.
Peter Moore is accompanied by yet another excited little girl.wearing
a suitably floral headband.
The rent is paid! Helen Evans of New Covent Garden Market (far left) and
Trustee Rowena Lusty (next left) hand over the apples and posies to Samantha
Coote and Adam Smith of KBC. They stand at the southern end of James Street
near the Georgian terrace on which the Trust owns the headlease.
A hot sunny day and a bit of a breeze as the Trustees round the corner
in the Piazza past the end of Henrietta Street. From left, Trustees Jo
Weir and Stan Sheriff. Centre, Sheila Springer (in pink) whose husband
Barry was a well known fruit and vegetable trader. Barrister Rosie Ivison
with posy and (far right) Bobby Parker of New Covent Garden Market.
The band heads for Covent Garden Market – the classical columns
of St Paul’s church form the background. This year we celebrated
the 25th anniversary of the re-opening of the Market building after its
restoration by the Greater London Council. Where fruit and vegetables
were once traded are now small specialist shops. Far right: the Trust’s
book-keeper, Linda Hirst.
Inside the Market building Peter Webb of Scottish Widows (left) accepts
a posy and a handshake from the Trust’s Chairman, Geoffrey Holland.
Geoffrey was head of the GLC’s Covent Garden team during the restoration
of the Piazza buildings.
A final line up by Andrew Womersley
(left) and Peter Webb, both of Scottish Widows, the company which together
with Henderson Global, owns the freehold of Covent Garden Market. In the
centre is Amanda Spedding who is the Manager of the Market.
The Town Crier has lost his bell and hat to Richard Williams of Nelson
Bakewell. He and his colleagues Stuart Adams (left) and Catherine Thomas
are the managing agents of several Covent Garden buildings including Covent
